TILE TYPES

There are two types of flooring tile. Ceramic is the most common, and is made of clay and baked in a kiln. Porcelain is made from fine white clay, and fired at a very high temperature. Porcelain is harder than Ceramic, and often has the luster of stone. It is resistant to staining.

Ceramic tile may be purchased either glazed or unglazed. Terra-cotta is one type of Ceramic tile, and it has a natural appearance. Some tile has a glazed surface which makes it look brighter, but glazing can also make the tile slippery. Choose the correct type for the area intended.

If your floor is subject to impact, check the tile’s hardness rating. Use only heat-resistant tiles for the fireplace.

Tile is heavy and brittle. It will crack if it isn’t properly supported. Before the install, the base floor must be prepared. The base must be flat, strong, and inflexible. Floor joists must be able to support the added load.

Grout is placed between the tiles. It is porous and will absorb water or stains, unless it is sealed. Ask your Contractor if this is included in the price of the install. If you are a do-it-yourself person you can accomplish this on your own. Your installer can tell you how to do this. It is easy, and the supplies can be purchased at you local Carpet & Tile store, or at places like Home Depot. Silicone grout is used most often in mildew-prone areas.

Installer of the Month

Sometimes our days are tough. You know? We are down on the floor all day, kicking up dust, and banging our knees on a padded metal rod. Well, you get the picture.
